Bridging Britpop harmonies and elaborate arrangements, 1990s U.K. art-rockers Jocasta comprised vocalist Tim Arnold, guitarist Jack Reynolds, bass player Andy Lewis, and drummer Adrian Meehan. Winning BBC One Singles of the Week, “Go” and “Change Me” launched the band’s career ahead of Jocasta’s 1997 album No Coincidence. Recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, the album was defined by complex string parts Arnold composed entirely by ear—an ability that sprang from his then-undiagnosed autism.

Spending parts of his youth in London, Yorkshire, France, and Spain, Arnold enrolled at the same school as Reynolds in 1989, where, after a lesson in Greek mythology, formed the band. After local gigs in Hertfordshire, the band paused temporarily until Arnold moved to Soho, London, in 1994 and restarted the band with Reynolds. Named after the mother of Oedipus, Jocasta reunited with Lewis and Meehan – who completed the definitive lineup.  The band was discovered by Bjork’s record label One Little Indian, but they eventually secured an American contract with Sony/Epic; in the U.K., Jocasta turned down several offers so they could remain on their own V4 Records label before moving to Epic Records. Their invigorating 1995 debut single, “Go”, was debuted on the iconic BBC One Evening Session by Steve Lamacq, with follow up single “Change Me”.  Both appeared on the U.K. charts and were chosen as BBC One Radio’s Single of the Week by Jo Whiley and Mark Radcliffe respectively. Despite the acclaim for their music, and growing affection for the band, Sony dropped the group on the album’s release day.

Jocasta disbanded soon after, with a B-sides and demos compilation album Ideas Are Bulletproof rounding out their discography in 2020, which featured recordings with longtime Radiohead and Jocasta engineer Jim Warren. In 2026, Jocasta’s ‘Go’ appeared on the Cherry Red compilation All You Good Good People: Britpop and Beyond 1995–1999, introducing the band to a new generation of listeners. Arnold went on to forge one of U.K. music’s most prolific and widely acclaimed solo careers of any independent artist working outside the infrastructure of the traditional music industry.
